Parliament of IndiaRajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2014 moved by the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Thawar Chand Gehlot, after a brief discussion.

The Bill was moved by the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment during Zero hour. Dr Karan Singh of Congress said the Bill was long overdue and would honour India’s commitment to the UN treaty on the subject.

Satish Chandra Mishra of the BSP wanted the Bill to be known as the Rights of the Differently Abled Bill. Some members urged the job reservation to be increased to five percent.

Later, the Bill was adopted by voice vote. The number of categories of disabled are to be increased for physical as well as mental disabilities.
